Athletics

KSD is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) which establishes rules and guidelines for athletic participation. KSD is also a member of the Great Plains School for the Deaf Conference which offers round robin or tournament competition in the activities listed below. The member schools include Minnesota, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas. Except for football, a school may accept 6th grade students as a member of the Middle School athletic team. At KSD, Middle School sports include students from grades 6-8.

Generally, athletics begin at 3:30p.m. All eligible High School, Middle School and Elementary School students may participate in sports. Athletes who participate in sports are expected to maintain good sportsmanship on the field and in the classroom. All cheerleaders and athletes must have passed a physical examination and have a physical form signed and dated by a physician on file before participating in practice. (Physicals must be completed after May 1st of the previous year.) All athletes must have written permission from their parents or legal guardian before participating in sports.

At Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, KSD girls won GPSD Track and Field Championship for the 3rd year in a row. Nine Deaf schools competed on Saturday, April 24. track
