Outreach Services
The Kansas School for the Deaf has a strong commitment to the education of students in Kansas who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. This commitment extends not only to students attending KSD but also to those in programs throughout the state.
KSD Outreach Services began in 1977 with the establishment of a centralized purchase, maintenance and distribution center for auditory training equipment. In response to requests from local schools, consultation services were expanded in 1988 with the addition of an Outreach Education Consultant. When a full time psychologist was added to the Outreach Team in 1994, KSD became capable of conducting full comprehensive evaluations for students throughout the state who are deaf and hard-of-hearing.
KSD Outreach Resource Services are focused on providing support within the framework of the student's current program. If you would like additional information or have specific needs, please contact us. Services include:
Student comprehensive evaluations in the areas of: audiology, psychology, speech and language, and education. LEA [Local Education Agency] staff and parents are directly involved in the evaluation process. The team evaluation involves all four areas. It may require up to three days. The KSD Family Suite may be available for family and/or school staff lodging at no additional cost. The evaluation process may include one or more evaluation team members visiting the home school and observing prior to the evaluation. Detailed written reports are provided to LEA staff and parents. Under special circumstances, team members may attend a follow-up staffing at the LEA.
Follow-up Consultation: LEA staff may request team members to attend a follow-up staffing at the LEA for all staff members involved with the student tested. Resource team members will share evaluation results and suggestions as this information is designed to support a collaborative education of the student.
Site Visit/Observation: Resource Team members are available to observe students on-site at their current program. The team members then meet with local staff and parents concerning suggestions based on the observation.
Site Visit/Consultation: Team members are available to visit programs and consult with local staff and parents. [These services entail a fee.]
Staff Inservice/Workshops: The Outreach team members can provide inservice programs, either at the local district or at KSD on a variety of topics.
The above services entail a fee. Written reports are provided to LEA staff and parents.
