Dear Parents and Employees:

The Kansas State School for the Deaf recognizing its responsibility to promote the health, welfare and safety of the students at the school has set up a Tobacco Free Task Force.

The Tobacco Free Task Force was organized with the belief that with education, community mobilization and policy change the first incidence of teen smoking will decrease and the age of first tobacco use will increase.

The Task Force is a five-member group (smokers and non-smokers) that has completed much research. They have scheduled workshops and other activities presented to various groups concerning health issues and the confirmed rising problem in the area of secondhand smoke.

The policy effective January 1, 2003, is the use of any tobacco products is not allowed on school owned grounds at any time by either students, employees of the school or visitors.

Please inform all of your family and friends of this change. Also urge your students to inform others that may attend our school events. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Maile, Ph.D.
Superintendent
