CURRICULUM
AND ASSESSMENT
K-6 curriculums are taught in the following areas: Literacy, Math, Science, Social Studies, Deaf Studies, Library/Media, Physical Education and Keyboarding/ Technology.
- All Curriculum areas have been or are currently being aligned to match the Kansas State Standards.
- Life Studies curriculum has been directly aligned with the Kansas State Extended Standards.
- Teachers complete a curriculum checklist every year to document student progress throughout the curriculum.
- The K-6 language arts program follows a "best practices" approach of rotating kids to meet their individual needs. This allows students to be taught at their instructional level of language and continue to receive challenging material to improve their skills.
- Students participate in the Accelerated Reader Program working toward individual, classroom and school-wide goals.
- IEP goals are aligned with school curriculum and state standards.
- Students going through a 3 year re-evaluation receive testing in the following areas if deemed necessary: audiology, psycho-educational, academic, communication (speech and American Sign Language), health/physical, and social-emotional. Students are also assessed with the Visual Listening Assessment Tool.
- Students at specific grade levels participate in state assessments.
Students can qualify to take assessments with accommodations (e.g.
signed directions and extended time), assessments with modification
(e.g. same content information but vocabulary and language is
more controlled), and alternate assessments (for students who
receive their core academics based on the extended standards).
- Stanford Achievement Tests D/HH are given during alternating
years.
- Local assessments include: STAR Reading Diagnostic, KSD English
Writing Sample, Year-End Math Assessment, curriculum based assessments
and informal reading inventories.
