Speech and language services are available to students at KSD. Therapy is provided to students whose IEP team has determined that such services are warranted. Speech and language assessments are conducted on a three-year basis as part of the KSD comprehensive evaluation process.
Counseling
KSD students, parents, and staff will find a variety of guidance
and counseling services available to them at school. The philosophy
of the staff involved is one that emphasizes the preventive and
positive aspects of mental health.
Personal/Social Assistance - KSD Psychology/Counseling
Department offers assistance to students and parents in times
of need. Requests for these services may be made to the Director
of Related Services.
Psychoeducational Assessment
A psychoeducational assessment may be requested by the IEP team to address concerns affecting a student's learning, or due to lack of information on the student. Depending on the referral question, this may consist of cognitive testing, academic testing, behavior rating scales, social-emotional assessment and observations within the classroom and non-classroom setting. Requests may occur during the triennial review of data or when a parent/teacher has requested a review. Please contact the Director of Related Services for more information.
Physical/Occupational Therapy
Both physical therapy and occupational therapy are available to students whose IEP team has determined that such services are needed. Determination of need is based on an assessment. Inquiries regarding an assessment in this area may be directed to the Department Head Teacher or to the Director of Related Services.
Infirmary
The Infirmary staff consists of three registered nurses, one LPN, one CNA,
and one doctor. The nurse's hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00
midnight. The hours of 12:00 midnight through 6:30 a.m. are staffed
by an attendant. The Infirmary is closed weekends, overnight and
holidays when all students are home. A doctor visits daily if
needed. Infirmary staff, with the doctor's input, may keep a student
in the Infirmary for a short-term minor illness or may send a
student home for medical attention.
Students who have been absent due to illness MUST report to the Infirmary before returning to school or the dormitory.
All medications are kept in the Infirmary and students are asked to report to the Infirmary for medicine. This policy is for the safety of everyone and also will allow for more accurate assessment of the student's illness.
All students have a vision screening every two years or sooner
if requested for special problems. Special services, such as diet
counseling, scoliosis screening, blood pressure checks, and other
individual needs are provided as indicated. The nurses would be
happy to discuss any questions that parents may have regarding
the health of their child or Infirmary policies.
