ASL/English Bilingual Professional Development (AEBPD) - (CAEBER)
The Kansas School for the Deaf has been a participant in developing a bilingual/ESL model to improve literacy education for the deaf. The project, ASL/English Bilingual Staff Development Model in Deaf Education is designed to train teachers in bilingual methodologies and to raise literacy and scores of young children who have hearing loss.
The mission of this project is accomplished through the following strategies:
- Promotion of the acquisition and development of both American Sign Language (ASL) and English for students, staff and parents
- Support for staff in the effective use of these languages in their educational settings
- The education of parents about literacy and language development using both ASL and English
- Development of appropriate instructional design integrating innovative technology
KSD has currently trained 77% of instructional staff, and has additional staff members involved in training this year. Staff members include academic, related services and residential personnel. School administrators are trained in providing administrative support in the bilingual education for the deaf.
