The AEBPD two-year training provides an opportunity for participants to use critical pedagogy as defined by Wink (1997). Critical pedagogy is a process where teachers and staff “name” their beliefs, “reflect” critically on them, and then take “action.” Participants in the AEBPD training will “name” traditional beliefs, critically and collaboratively “reflect” on them, and then “act” to implement effective practices of bilingual/ESL instruction to increase the ASL/English language and literacy skills of students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing which will enhance student achievement in all academic classes and areas of residential life. These summaries document the discussions and thoughts of AEBPD participants as they critically reflect on the multitude of issues involved in the education of students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing. It is this process that strengthens the professional competence that is essential to quality education.
